Causes and Treatment of Sexual Dysfunction

Introduction

Sexual malfunction also known as sexual dysfunction is the incapability of an individual to engage in normal sexual intercourse. The problem could be affected by either of the parties and could lead to severe mental and health problems in the future. Although neglected by many this ailment requires a thorough analysis and study to prescribe remedies to restore a joyful life. The various causes that could lead to sexual dysfunction are guilt, anxiety, worry, stress or personality issues. Arousal disorders refer to the inability of an individual to have arousal for sexual gratification. Orgasm disorders refer to the prolonged delay or inability to attain orgasm. Pain disorders refer to the severe pain while having sexual intercourse which can be due to medical reasons or due to personal reasons. Each condition is serious is its own capacity and requires individual attention of a medical practitioner. A complete lack of interest in sexual activity, problems with arousal, and erectile dysfunctions are the major sub-classifications of the malfunctions. Physical factors can also contribute to sexual malfunctions like poor physical health, disabilities, deformation of reproductive organs, etc. Known as impotence in men and frigidity in women, most of the disease conditions are self inflicted due to lack of interest or a busy lifestyle. The common symptoms of sexual malfunction include a lack of interest in intercourse, lack of fantasies, or unable to have or maintain an erection. In certain cases although individuals are able to reach arousal and stimulation they are unable to reach orgasm due to a variety of personal and medical reasons or they take unusually long periods of time to have an orgasm. Insane fetishes are also considered cases of sexual malfunctioning that require medical attention. Inability to ejaculate is also a serious symptom of sexual malfunction. Proper prescription can be prescribed only if the doctor is told about the exact problem faced by an individual. The partner can also aid in help in diagnosing the disease as he or she will have a better understanding than anybody else. The doctor may conduct a verbal examination which may extend to physical examinations in certain cases. Problems with past relationships, physical abuse, smoking or drinking habits, etc will also help a physician in better understanding the patient’s problems in a better way.
